How to find and compare AI tools
Start from the task, browse by category, then use alternatives pages, comparison pages and member reviews to narrow your choice.
There are a lot of AI tools, and many of them sound alike. This guide shows how to go from a vague need to a short list you can actually test.
Start with the task
Before you search, write down what you need done in one sentence. "Turn sales calls into notes I can paste into our customer records" is far easier to match than "an AI note taker". Note your budget, the devices you use, and any apps the tool needs to work with.
Browse or search
- Browse by category. The directory groups tools into categories such as AI assistants, image generators, research and customer support. Each category page explains what is worth comparing in that kind of tool.
- Search for the job. Search for a task or a feature, not only a product name.
- Check the community lists. Top rated, Most upvoted and Trending show what members value. These lists come from member activity only.
Alternatives pages
An "Alternatives to" page lists tools that overlap with a given tool, based on each tool's categories, features, pricing and platforms, plus member reviews. It is the quickest way to find a cheaper option, one that runs on your platform, or one with a feature the first tool lacks.
Some alternatives pages include a Featured slot paid for by a maker. The slot is always labeled, and it does not change any review, rating or community ranking.
Comparison pages
An "X vs Y" page puts two tools side by side: categories, features, pricing model, platforms and what members said in their reviews. Use it once you have two or three finalists.
Alternatives and comparison pages only appear in search engines once there is enough real information on them. A page with too little information stays out of search results until it fills in.
Read reviews the right way
- Look for reviews from people doing a task like yours.
- Read the critical reviews too, and see whether the owner replied.
- Check the date. AI tools change quickly, and an older review may describe an older version.
Test before you commit
Try your real task on a free plan or trial before paying. Check usage limits, export options and data terms on the maker's own site. Choosing an AI tool safely has a checklist. Still unsure? Ask in AI Tools or Help & Questions.
